My well-loved 1996 Subaru Legacy L station wagon. It needs a new clutch, which will be about $1000. ...but the mechanic MIGHT have to drill out and replace some rusted-in bolts on the undercarriage in order to replace the clutch. That would bring the price closer to $3000.

I’d love to repair it, but $3k is a lot for a 22yo car. And I have a hard time finding a good-condition pre-1999 Subaru wagon around here. :/

(Why pre-1999? Maryland law requires mandatory inspections when a car changes hands, but exempts cars at least 20 years old, which means a pre-1999 car is MUCH cheaper than one 1999 or newer, since I don't have to pay for inspection and can just repair faults as I come across them.)

@noelle Nice! I always tell people I'm from DC but really I was born and raised in Silver Spring
