Way back when I was but a leveret, I had an old mechanical calculator - gods know what era, but probably 1950s, maybe earlier. Of course, I had to take the case off and see inside - gods, so complex! And yet, it worked perfectly. Type in the amount of money on the keyboard matrix, crank the handle, and it'd work out the new subtotal and print all that out on the paper roll.

(Maybe a small element of my fascination was it was from the pre-decimal days, so its buttons had to allow for pounds, shillings, and pence. History by then, which made it all the more weird and wonderful =:)
