Why I dislike "The Algorithims" CW: Guns, Machine Learning, capitalism, long-ish.
So, I'm getting a gun of my own. Naturally, I've been turning to one of the more easily accessible repositories of human knowledge, Youtube, for input, information, and just general exposure to a new culture that I've largely ignored and dismissed.
This new interest has been noted by the large computer clusters that are increasingly being relied on by the powers that be to keep my eyeballs and thinking matter engaged and locked into their content ecosystem. In an effort to keep my interest there, instead of anywhere else, like work or other uses of my bandwidth, they recommend other videos for me to watch, based upon the videos that other people who watched the video i'm currently watching have watched.
The fact that this includes the very videos that made me dismiss guns entirely is completely lost on those poor bits of code doing their best.
I really wish there was a way to declare my taste profile so that I didn't get things I don't want to see served up to me.
