80% of what I want from a "social network" I had 10 years ago. Mastodon barely gives me 40%, but at least it's better than Twitter and Facebooks 10%.
I am so fucking tired of open alternatives "copying" the designs optimised for capitalism, and just saying "this is what we want, just freeeee".
This whole model of everything centered around a constantly updating stream of "content" with no regard of topic or context is designed for and by capitalists to maximize surveillance potential.
Stop building "alternatives" and start building better fucking software.
Communication software is so fucking important in our society, we can't just let the scope and broad strokes be defined by others.
And that actually includes you. We can't let OUR communication be defined by YOU. We need new models, and we need software that can actually be remixed by common people.
Fuck linux and command line, that's only appealing to elitist assholes.
We need networks designed by people who like using Microsoft Word because it's a powerful tool that lets them write what they want and present it in a sufficiently elegant way.
We need the non-techies to stop being serfs on privately owned servers.
Are you bound to land owned by someone else? You're a serf.

@zatnosk Pushing one further, we need full-duplex decentralized software that doesn't _require_ servers. Mastodon is a good step away from a centralized communication service, but it's not the ultimate goal, something like Secure Scuttlebutt which is completely decentralized. Same for other services. Client/server fat-apps that respect the hardware requirements of the people running them.
Identity, too, needs to be globally flexible and locally defined.
