Winston was an Editor. It was his job to hyper-personalize each film and TV show for every viewer; digitally replacing a scandalous celebrity with one with a much cleaner reputation, moving a character's first appearance from season 3 to season one.
He did all of this not in the service of any government requesting censorship, but to maximize Engagement with the Company's Content.
There were no more "director's cuts" anymore. Only Winston's cuts.
