Okay. Real question: Can someone ELI5 what even is and why I should use Docker?

I'm used to doing things the old way, unpacking archives, filling in the config file on my own, and figuring out what's broken.

The big con of docker is that not every part of the OS can be treated as part of the configuration.

So far my experience with it has been decidedly mixed, but most of my professional work is in Java and Java prior to 9 takes a lot of babying to work as expected.
