@gravecat You can send something like a DM by changing the "status privacy" of a toot to "direct," though bare in mind we're on two different servers, so there's no guarantee of privacy.

@Mycroft @gravecat Perhaps not in the same way Twitter does, but direct private messaging is a feature of Mastodon, and it does work fairly well so long as the message doesn't leave your home instance.

@gravecat @mawr That's why I said short answer. And even in same instance it boils down to how much you trust your current and all future administrators, the server code's lack of exploitable vulnerabilities now and in the future, etc etc.

I didn't parse that subtext in your initial statement. I'd have agreed with the initial statement if it included "guaranteed confidential" between "direct" and "private messaging."
