If I could bankrupt one company I'd really have a hard time deciding but honestly the one that makes Funkopops
@starkatt I honestly don't get how anyone can like them other than the fact that they're really cheap
there's so many better collectible figurines
hating on funko pops
@noiob actually okay well the short version is that they represent everything wrong with the commodification of culture. There's a billboard on a main avenue here for a fucking funko *store* that says "everyone is a fan of something." It subverts engagement with stories into a salable good, an ugly piece of cheap plastic that will sit ignored on a shelf until it becomes part of a landfill forever.
re: hating on funko pops
@noiob now I have this whole thing in my head along the lines of "how about instead of buying mass-market consumer garbage, show you care about media by engaging with its meaning, both by making its artistic sensibilities and message messages a part of your experience, and by critically examining both its merits and failings."
re: hating on funko pops
@starkatt hmmm
@noiob I have a whole rant about funko pops brewing in my head but I don't want to go on about it somewhere that someone who actually likes 'em might see.
