Google: battery saver mode on Android 10 will switch to dark mode to save even more battery
there's no option to turn it off btw
me, whose phone is not OLED: that doesn't do anything for me but uh thanks I guess
@monorail wasn't OLED black the hot energy saving trick ever since people started putting those screens into phones? and always-on display functions wouldn't really make sense if it didn't save energy
@noiob if it's an always on display kind of thing, where the whole screen is off except for a clock or whatever, that's pretty good
according to what i read, oled themes in apps do very little
@noiob not enough of the screen is pitch black and even the parts that are keep changing, generally
@monorail hm, makes sense I guess
honestly I'm still not convinced that OLED actually is better than LCD in every way (though to be fair I don't use any OLED screens regularly)
@noiob @monorail they definitely have their pros and cons. my OLED screen has major contrast issues at low brightness and for some reason black pixels take a little longer to respond than others, which means if you're scrolling at a really low brightness the pitch black parts of the scrolling area smear a bit. LCDs tend to look the same at all brightness levels but also blacks look bad, airgaps are bigger and there are often image retention issues (which can look awful)
@noiob i've also read some pretty disappointing reports about how much it actually helps
