I wish more tech folks understood that the only thing "just learn to code" as a response to class inequities will actually fix is the hardness of the tech labor market that we generally benefit from

that is, our very own high salaries and benefits

and further the ability and time _to_ learn to code is not just a trivial thing to ask people who are already being ground under their jobs and wider society

I love teaching people to code, my job here at a coding bootcamp is the only job I've been positive about and I do think as long as that hard labor market remains it will help folks in material ways

but we literally have an admissions process that is stringent and we have limited resources so for me to glibly imply it's a full solution would be smug incorrect bullshit

I can tell you our students are still often struggling to even be able to fully comprehend our teaching because of shit in their lives including still having other jobs

it's not easy or simple even given the opportunity and it's insulting to imply it is

if you need more pressure, don't ignore for a second that once AI like GitHub copilot produces "good enough" code, we're next door the chopping block

and our past status as labor aristocracy will not save us

but to be fair even this centers our own issues when really the bigger point is:

fucking care about other people who aren't coders

people shouldn't have to learn to code to be granted the right to a comfortable life

even people who do learn to code aren't guaranteed a comfortable life since that's no guarantee of an actual job or even a high paying one

@chimerror "everyone should learn to code" is tech company propaganda to ensure they'll always have cheap labor
