It's always been inexplicable. I got an ad-free ride on Twitter from day one. They never made a dime off me. I had theories why they did this but I never knew for sure.

Here's what I know for sure:

Twitter's previous management had reasons to allow third-party clients. They thought Twitter benefitted.

I'll bet 87 cents Musk doesn't know what those reasons *were*.
