@elilla you'd still have to read the same script multiple times, which can be a lot of text for a long video
there seems to have been an issue with spam with large gaming channels that had beef with each other, I'm guessing that's what brought the feature to the attention of management

If I remember correctly, (because I was pissed about this) the declaration that community captions were being abused came at the same time that YT was introducing a program for uploaders to pay for caption and subtitle services if they didn't submit and time their own subtitles
And keeping the auto-generate was the concession to rumblings of ADA lawsuits for removal of accessibility
The large gaming channels by this point all had editing teams, and therefore someone who could literally be paid to review caption submissions of that week, and the submissions weren't anonymous so repeat spammers could be subject to moderation tools; so while yeah, some channels complained occasionally of rival fans sending in spam it really just wasn't an actual problem.
It was the cover for an attempt at capitalism
