apparently the iPhone XR has a "side button" instead of a power button

holding the side button just pops up Siri

I asked Siri how to turn off the iPhone XR and she just responded "Interesting question."

yes, I did figure out how to turn off the XR. that is not the point

phrasing it as a command, "turn off iPhone XR", makes her respond "I believe that's beyond my abilities at the moment."

so like... do a web search??? how is Windows Vista Speech Recognition smarter than a modern "AI assistant"

I get not wanting to make search the "default" action, even though that's always how these things used to work

but at least... offer? have the default response to a question be "I'm not sure. Would you like to search the web?"

not fucking "Interesting question."

the NLP is clearly able to discern between commands and queries

though it's all a lost cause anyway, I'm sure Apple is just gonna plug it into an LLM and make you sit there as it rattles off a paragraph of purple prose that contains a complete guess at the answer

the age of the intelligent agent is over before it even really had a chance to begin

when I was getting into speech recognition assistants, the whole idea was that they were constantly getting new recognizers and knowledgebases plugged into them with intentionally designed rules

and when I used to use Ok Google on my phone before it became Google Assistant it did feel quite "smart" and useful

asking Apple Siri a very basic question about an Apple iPhone, likely a very common question that confuses a lot of new users, does not come off as unreasonable to me

especially when you consider the fact trying to turn off the phone the old way pops up Siri now! how on earth is adding a hardcoded rule for asking how to power off this phone not the first thing that came to these peoples' heads

@unascribed Google actually tells you that one option for turning your phone off is telling Assistant to shut it down (it pops up the power menu)… or you can just switch back to the old behavior
