German folk: What's the difference between bread and toast?

Follow

@spottyfox Brot
Toastbrot (also Brot but generally Germans will get angry at you when you promise Brot and serve this)
Toast is usually a word for toasted bread or even toasted bread with toppings (e.g. Hawaii-Toast)

@noiob This explains the "all they sell is toast" complaints I've seen from Germans visiting US supermarkets

@noiob @spottyfox

When we lived in Switzerland, and bought sandwich bread, it came labeled in Switzerland's three official languages (not counting Romansch) as:

Toast- und Sandwichbrot
Pain pour toasts et sandwiches
Pane per toast e sandwich
