@onfy my first computer booted with that logo c:
@onfy wait, did all award bioses of the time boot like that?
@noiob all the ones I have do!
@onfy I wonder what they had to do for that, probably support more c-states or sth :D
@noiob personally I think it's a load of rubbish, the board I have doesn't even properly support standby. as was customary at the time.
@onfy mine did suspend-to-ram with no issues but suspend to disk broke sometimes so I stopped using it
@noiob maybe yours was newer, mine is a Pentium II board
@onfy yeah it runs a pretty zippy (for Windows ME) Athlon XP
@onfy actually I have no idea how that compares with a PII, but with a decent amount of RAM XP is pretty alright on it (a bit annoying to not have SSE2)
@noiob Athlon XP is a good deal newer and faster. you can run XP on a Pentium II, but it won't be pleasant
@onfy I only ever really used ME on it but it always felt pretty good, the nvidia 2MX in there sadly didn't do DX9 but what I could play ran well. I have beef with whoever decided to sell it with 128 megabytes of RAM though
@noiob yeah, ME can be an advantage on that type of computer, letting you play old windows games. otoh on a Pentium II if you have ISA slots (like me) the lesser ISA support compared to 98 is a disadvantage. not sure about performance, I've never tried it
@onfy It's a PCI system with an AGP GPU. I actually have a USB 2 card in there to fix my biggest gripe with it and it works great in ME but locks up XP :D
@noiob yeah, that's similar to my Pentium II system, computers from this rough era will be PCI/AGP. otoh my P2 has ISA alongside them.
funny, I also have a USB 2 card in my system, but it only works reliably in... linux... disconnects a lot in 2000, how much did I test it in ME...?
@onfy I'll have to add that it took me some time to install the correct drivers correctly, but I mostly blame the manufacturer for including one of those "here's a driver for every product we make, have fun" CDs
@onfy the card also has firewire but no idea if that works :D
@onfy sorry for the spam, but I think the issue in XP is interrupts but that's about as far as I got last time I messed with it
@noiob spam?
@onfy just that it was my third reply in a row and I could've put it all in one post 😅
@noiob it's okay. pretty hard to be spam when you're talking with me about old computers
@onfy have a shot of the desktop I dug up. I usually run it in a higher res though, love this lil CRT
@noiob Very nice... but Skype on WinME?
@onfy yeah at some point I installed like, Skype 3 or sth, took a while to find a version that didn't immediately try to update but it worked perfectly until Microsoft axed all old versions. At the time it was my friend group's main IM. I never tried calls though, would've been cool to talk between my PSP Go and this computer.
@onfy you could just use MSN messenger through https://escargot.chat
@noiob I'll check that out
@onfy I've used it both on ME and XP successfully and it was kinda cool to use. I think the newer versions still run perfectly on newer Windows. If my banner is cached on sleeping you should be able to see a slighly doctored screenshot, actually
@noiob "extremely online"
@onfy yeah that's the part I edited in mspaint
@onfy my PSP Skype use was sadly just calling echo123 once. For obvious reasons they didn't bother implementing chatting
