controller disassembly, learning about a bad design

so, I have a Gulikit KK3 controller which has, for the most part, been the best controller I've ever had. but recently, the right trigger suddenly stopped working properly in the middle of playing, and then later I discovered it was rattling inside, so, I decided to take it apart to figure out why.

one nice feature of this controller is it has physical switches in the back to convert between analogue and digital triggers, and it was only when I took it apart that I figured out how.

essentially, the switches just wedge a carefully shaped piece of plastic next to the triggers, which effectively locks the triggers into a limited range of motion. this also adds an extra piece of plastic in front of the triggers which helps activate the button on the main board once this range is passed.

of course, this piece of plastic is... incredibly thin, and unlike the triggers which are held up by the spring, has absolutely nothing supporting it. so, pushing on it too many times just breaks it clean off, forcing you to push the trigger all the way down to reach the button/pass the dead zone for activation.

I'm not even sure I'll be able to glue the piece back into place, which is unfortunate, but since it's entirely on the back side of the controller, I won't need to disassemble it fully to do that. I only disassembled it this time in order to get at the piece of plastic which wormed its way under the main board.

@clarfonthey hm, I'd propose 3D printing but that looks like a challenging part. Maybe plastic welding?
