i don't actually know why "normal maps" (textures designed to trick your eyes into thinking there are ridges or grooves on a flat surface) and stuff like the "normal axis" (the original x/y/z axis of an object regardless of it's current rotation) are both called "normal". i'm sure there's a technical explanation.
