@mcc It sucks that #RCS, even though being an open standard, has no FOSS implementation. It is only implemented in Google's proprietary Play Services on Android, and they have a whitelist for the apps that can use it, which currently is limited to Google's and Samsung's messaging apps. This really sucks, because RCS could have been a massive improvement for everyone if it was implemented in AOSP and could be used without proprietary apps.

@boo_ @mcc I think there were RCS apps before it, by carriers? It's a fairly old standard

@boo_ @mcc oh, the English wikipedia doesn't mention anything but the German one lists a few attempts, starting as early as 2012

@mcc @ocdtrekkie @boo_ yeah, that'll work in the next major iOS version, it already works in the beta

@mcc @ocdtrekkie @boo_ pretty hard to use it otherwise
also I think end-to-end encryption doesn't yet work on iOS because the Universal Profile doesn't contain a standard for it (Google made their own extension)

@ocdtrekkie @boo_ @mcc as far as I can tell there was a time before the universal profile where carriers ran it themselves
