A while ago I asked for donations to get some clips of 80s #hacker #news released from an archival service (Vanderbilt) that charges for retrieving and sharing clips from VHS vaults they have.

These clips were lost media.

I’m making a thread then asking for help again.

The effort is to fill in blanks in the early days of #hacking #history, when a lot of the news coverage just can’t be found online and there is nothing for people to refer to in terms of video which as we all know is how a lot of people want to learn now.

This is the third clip I got a hold of, from 1997.

Basically I am looking to go back through 1985 and 1986 and fill in some more blanks in coverage that we have access to. Our history.

So if you want to donate every penny goes towards fees, each clip is at minimum $37 (I have no idea why) and any clips I retrieve will go on Internet Archive for everyone to enjoy.

The two clips I am aiming to retrieve from the archive are from July 17th, 1985, ABC and CBS segments on Plainfield, New Jersey teens' theft of credit card and telephone information and illegal entry into the Pentagon's computer system.

At the time it was said that these kids could move satellites.

@realhackhistory I didn't know the Hackers and Wargames movies were not actually that far-fetched

@noiob they couldn't control satellites, IIRC there was a misunderstanding about them making long distance calls via satellite mentioned in the press and the story got garbled along the way.

@realhackhistory I just meant accessing systems in general

@noiob oh yeah, hackers were running rampant since at least the first home computers were in circulation in the early 80s.
