Hot take: Your HOTAS interface to a vehicle carrying civilians or untrained personnel/passengers being a dual shock or Xbox motif gamepad is not just "fine", it's a damn good choice if it doesn't damage interface efficiency/functionality.

If there's even a shred of a chance some untrained, panicking person might need to lay hands on the controls to save a bunch of people or avert a disaster, having the main or a backup interface be a thing they have a 90% chance of having touched a lot in their life is an objective good thing.

I kind of roll my eyes every time someone talking about Oceangate goes to "lmao Xbox controller"

It's a sub. You don't even need to worry about roll. Do you want a full aircraft instrument panel or something?

@trysdyn I mean they could've gone for better quality than the bargain bin little brother controller

@noiob Did they get a third party thing? I always hear "lmao they used an xbox controller"

Cuz yeah for something that important you kind of want something that won't break and I've broken the triggers on 3 Logitech dualshock motif pads in my life just trivially.

Follow

@trysdyn they used a Logitech F710 with 3D-printed stick attachments

@noiob Not great no. Hopefully they at least had backups in the sub. I've sproinged the trigger springs on those multiple times.

@trysdyn thing is even first party gamepads are not rated to be used in environments where simple electrical failures can be lethal

@trysdyn oh also that's a wireless gamepad. as primary method of control.

@trysdyn I really liked this video by a safety engineer (timestamped to the relevant chapter) youtu.be/4eNm8vnKZ38?t=12m57s

he has done a bunch of very interesting ones since then if you like the style
