god I wish they built smart tvs with the compute on a separate board like they do with digital signage
@noiob hey, i had the same idea
but crapital wouldn't go for that...
@onfy I guess with HDMI CEC a set top box can control the TV now but it feels like a waste to have all this android just sitting here
@noiob better for the tv not to have any computer in it than that (bad android in the tv), but it's a shame because with a box its power state isn't synced with the tv
@noiob with my box it comes on with the tv, and thanks to cec switches the tv to its input, meaning if i turned on the tv to do something else i need to switch back after it boots
but if i turn it off the only way to turn it back on is turning the tv on and off
and if i forget to turn it off before turning the tv off the file system will be marked dirty and I'll be forced to wait for fsck before it boots
@noiob so what i'd wish for is being able to turn it on with the remote only when i want to use it, and have it automatically shut down when i turn the tv off
@noiob also for my box not to be stuck on a linux kernel from a century ago
@noiob of you're confused btw, i have the barrel jack of the box plugged into my tv's usb port since it runs off +5v
the tv powers it, and as a result it turns on when the tv starts powering its usb ports
and also the knuckleheads that came up with the hardware gave it no way to power itself back on after a software-initiated shutdown
@onfy the TV is always gonna have a computer in it
@noiob what i mean is i don't want the computer running hostile and/or outdated software that's also useless
just make the tv computer do tv things and let me watch streams/mkvs with my own hardware
alternatively I'd also be okay with putting less shit chips in here and updating Android TV for longer
