I have a question for all my fellow machinists and manufacturing nerds on here!
In the core of a lock there's the keyway, which commonly has a awkward prismatic shape, open on the top, and with the invers cross section of the key. How is that shape manufactured?
The only way I could think off is with a broach, but that seems horribly high effort in manufacture. And (some) locks are cheap, and they still have weird keyways.
@la https://youtu.be/_OkaX7ZTM8U?t=129 at least in this old "How It's Made" it looks like some hyper-specific CNC machine? I'm guessing the cheapness is just economy of scale
@la this manufacturer has the keyway broacher as a separate machine from the other steps in manufacturing the cylinder https://youtu.be/7hJIz5Mq49Y?t=194
