tried to play some Tomb Raider 2013 but then I got to the horrible stealth-and-getting-spotted-is-instant-death level and ugh that just took all the fun out of it in an instant

Having stealth as an option is really good, but that way is just lazy. Plus the death is scary and loud and you can't really tell if you're hidden or not.

Rise of the Tomb Raider on the other hand has some great stealth gameplay, and it's always optional (I've cheesed hard levels by sitting in a shed with the full-auto shotgun). At Gamescom they showed a gameplay video that had quite a bit of combat (youtu.be/xiYy2XNVc2s) and people asked about nonlethal ways to play it, so the next day they published a video on Youtube of the exact same level being played very elegantly without a single kill (youtu.be/hGhJc0spPQg)
