Does anyone know of any blind accessible IM clients that are available on Apple & [either Android or Windows] devices?

I have a friend who primarily uses Text-to-Speech on her Apple phone, and relies on WhatsApp & Facebook messenger. I avoid those because [privacy nastiness + stalker history on them].

We want to talk more, but neither are sure what to suggest. "Install many things, find out which is accessible through trial & error" isn't really fair on her.

@pastelbat idk any IM clients just off the top of my head but readittome on android is a TTS app for sms and apps, and they can reply with their voice

@pastelbat The only "good" chat app I can think of that's proper cross platform is Matrix (riot.im is the app most use) but I have a funnny feeling that may fall flat at times.

The XMPP situation is a mess so that's out...

Telegram? It's used by a large chunk of the population but I'd be very wary of their "nobody can see your messages" claims. It's not the "best" IMHO for privacy but I've found it to be a decent least-worst option at times.

@kemonine
I'd been kinda wary cuz I'd heard from other ppl it takes a lot of tech knowledge, but.. Tbh using the browser version of Riot (not w/ screen reader) has been simple so far?

Fishing around on search engine, I found this thread, which suggests that some people have successfully used screen-readers to access Riot.im (github.com/vector-im/riot-web/).

I have no clue if that'll apply equally to the Apple Store app version.. but it sounds like a worthwhile avenue to chase!

@pastelbat If you're self hosting... lots and lots of spoons and concerns.

If you're using the riot.im and matrix.org hosted instances. Less so 😉

🤞 that you and your friend can get a solid option working.

@pastelbat I use Signal, which is quite straightforward but I have no clue how accessible it is. Neither, unfortunately, does its website 😐

@robparsons Yeah, I really wish devs/marketing would uh, prioritise this stuff and actually mention when they have, cuz like.. They've put in the effort, but the market-default is 'no' and.. Having no way to know that is silly.

(I'm not blind, but use accessibility stuff for other disabilities & run into this myself a lot)

@pastelbat ditto. I have decent but ageing sight; I usually use around 150% zoom, as a result of which I know how bad the design of many websites is.

@pastelbat the other thing that bugs me is that a lot of accessibility issues are actually usability issues. If designers got usability right, it would benefit all users, and disproportionately benefit those with accessibility issues.
