Mastodon tech musings
Mastodon is like email. But not because of the inbox/outbox concept, which some people focus on! It's like the early days of email when anyone could spin up their own email server on their own domain or hop on a friend's server. (HT lycanthrope.net!)
You could exchange messages with any other email server out there, but you also had to deal with the spam: blacklists, whitelists, and the sheer volume as spam levels grew exponentially.
Gmail rose to dominate because it figured out email well in a couple crucial areas: it's really good at managing spam for you, and it had some UI/UX concepts that were a great improvement over the basics (like threading messages while hiding inline reply text).
It'll be interesting to see how Mastodon evolves to handle the similar challenges that will undoubtedly arise as its popularity and usage increases.
wow someone wrote an actually good article about mastodon and the fediverse for once

There's so many people I can't follow because their instance or mine isn't federated. I have a mastodon.social as a backup, but even that doesn't work sometimes.
I wish there was something that could combine multiple accounts into a single feed, and then replied, followed, faved, based on ranked choice - defaulting until it finds the one that works. So you could make an account anywhere to follow anyone, but still have it all popup in one timeline.
PSA re: Mastodon 4.0 Interface, boosts appreciated
The new web interface includes a footer link to "Get the app", which leads to a page that heavily emphasizes the first-party Mastodon apps.
As a reminder, the first-party apps are intentionally missing core functionality (Local/Federated timelines, "unlisted" post privacy), and are a very poor user experience compared to third-party offerings.
If you're an admin, please consider editing your local instance's code to replace or remove this link.
Just finished watching episode 11 of Andor with @saintajax33
One more episode to go. We’ve been enjoying this series.
A friend showed me this and I think others might find it useful.
Basically you grant it permission and it finds any follows/followers/mutes/blocks from birdsite, on Mastodon.
I cannot vouch for every potential security factor involved since it does need to view your birdsite info to work, but you can always revoke access when you're done.
@rootsworks i have mine up on the wall, from the off-FC art show in... 2012, i wanna say?
