Flash was buggy, riddled with security holes, and abused to hell and back by people who didn't care about your EXPERIENCE as long as they could get your ATTENTION.
(And, as noted, it was accessible to creators but completely inaccessible to anyone who used a screen reader, to whom Flash content was a massive gaping hole in the website.)
But MAKING Flash content was easy, so people miss it anyway, which is understandable. It was nice to be able to just get going on something.
