@shaderphantom please forgive me if I'm doing the Geek Answer thing here. It's tempting to scream racism - and yeah that's definitely part - but Bush II's administration wasn't characterized by *daily* outrages. There's been this deluge of stuff and it feels almost like Maria was 5 years ago.
And capitalism got uglier over the last decade too, more than the administration is eating attention - 2006 me would probably punch me for saying life was easier in 2006, but it was.

i feel like i remember we were still talking about the bush administration's failures in katrina for over a year afterward but coverage of maria has basically gone to zero
