hey #linux users what are your thoughts on current laptops for linux (serious question)
i'm lookin at the xps 13/15, the hp spectre x360, and system76's ultrabook offering
i'd likely need to dualboot windows 10 for development on phantasy star online 2, so issues with cpu/device firmware updates aren't insurmountable issues
this is why the xps 13 is so appealing to me. it's small. it's powerful. it's sleek. and for the most part it doesn't have device issues in linux, save for the fingerprint reader, which lol who cares
the spectre x360 currently has some unresolved HDA stuff in the audio driver that makes the speakers only function in "tablet mode" meaning two of them just turn off
@shaderphantom I bought an XPS 13" 5 years ago for $700 from bestbuy for a work demo. I still use it as my main knock around browsing and communications laptop, running ubuntu. Battery still works.
My only complaint is the trackpad is a bit annoying in linux (too wide so it picks up your hand when typing sometimes)
@shaderphantom I also have an XPS 15" which is loaded and works fine but it weighs an ever loving ton so I dont like to carry it anywhere.
@Fuego what year is the xps 15? i'm sure the trackpad issue on the 13 has probably been addressed since then
@shaderphantom the xps is probably a 2012.
The trackpad issue is a linux issue, not a hardware issue. The boundaries of trackpads are all obnoxiously set in software. You could fix it if you wanted to redefine all the geometry, but its a serious pain.
this laptop needs to be ultrabook level, like the macbook air but _without_ using a core-M. i need a _real_ i5 or i7, not these fake mega undervolted ones.
