the real cause is rendering/quality/2d/gles2_use_nvidia_rect_flicker_workaround
which apparently does not exclusively enable for nvidia
and severely impacts tilemap performance

huh... no, it's actually the GLES2 video driver that is very very VERY slow on macOS for some reason. GLES3 is fine.
whoa godot 3.1 on my mac has very very poor gdscript execution performance for... not really any reason I can discern right now?

@shaderphantom A long while ago people were writing a new tool to insert custom block types into Super Mario World (to replace an older tool for the same purpose) but were stuck on picking a name for it.
And one name floating around was CBT, for Custom Block Tool. It did not get chosen.
sources tell me I shouldn't be using "CBT" in this context anymore
