So Gab has decided that their own code that they spent $5M of investor money developing is so unsalvageably bad that they're going to use Mastodon's code instead, with the added bonus of leeching off of our apps (with Gab apps being banned from app stores)

This is an early warning to fellow admins to be vigilant and domain-block them on sight, when/if they appear (unconfirmed whether they intend to federate), and to app devs to consider if blocking Gab's domains from their app is necessary.

Gab is a website by nazis who spent millions of cash (scammed from fellow nazis under the pretense of building BLOCKCHAIN TWITTER, a promise they went back on immediately after they got money) and years of time to build a php piece of shit that is overran with porno spambots and yet has fewer users than large fediverse instances.

They‘ve now realized they‘re too incompetent to make software and are spending months to get software written by jews, gay trans furries and antifascists to run.

It makes it abundantly clear that the public feedback they asked for on the change was nothing more than lip service to the extension developer community. I am ashamed to admit I fell for it, because the changes could have been rationalized at the time.

Now, it's abundantly clear that Google wants to exploit you, through Chrome.

Move to Firefox now. There is no better option, now that every other browser is Webkit or Blink based, or directly forked from Chromium.

Context: Google has chosen to move forward Manifest V3 changes that hamstring extension's capabilities for blocking arbitrary requests.

This applies to all Chrome users and extensions, except to Enterprise customers.

Chrome's relationship with its userbase can now be considered "coercive", honestly. After all that feedback on the extension manifest, they chose the worst of the options for users, and the best option for Google.

Given gorhill's investigation of their SEC filing and what it reveals, I do not believe anyone should be using Chrome anymore. That doesn't really matter, because once ad-blockers end up hamstrung in a future release, that will just force everyone over to Firefox or Edgeium.

to be absolutely clear, as:Authenticated is meant to be a mitigation for the fact that the binary public vs. followers-only audience selection options is basically gutting the fediverse every day.

archive team just collected some of the blood and stored it. yes, that was shitty, but we need to clean our own house and stop living in denial about this problem.

(and i am talking with archive team about building an archival system for the fediverse that respects user’s self-agency. they are understanding now why this is different than scraping tumblr or google plus. those platforms, after all, have privacy controls that actually work.)
