I have a suspicion that a big part of the confusion here is I'm trying to jam my experiences into the typical plurality narratives I've been handed when my own stuff doesn't actually fit very well.
Okay though so I actually am probably plural and I have no idea what that actually means for me or how to make progress on understanding things. Several times in the last couple of years now, new folks have suddenly show up or take front unexpectedly, but even as I try to establish communication their presence fades in like a week. I don't know where to go from there.
@vahnj That's a little disappointing but I can see why, if they want to work like birdsite does. Part of the appeal though is, well, not working like birdsite does. At least here I have granular post-locking control -- that's actually one of the Masto features I'm especially excited about.
Once I actually make more friends here, private/unlisted posts can always be a thing though :)
A couple of topics I'd feel okay talking about here "publically" but only if I felt like they wouldn't risk being spread.
I know awoo.space only federates with whitelisted instances. Maybe that's enough? But mastadon.social is enormous and I don't trust it.
Is there a privacy option for "show this on my instance's local timeline but not federated timelines on other instances?"

It's so cool to be able to just scroll down the federated timeline and see people I know from bird website or somewhere go past. Feeling part of a small space that known cool folks feel is worth showing up for is really nice :)
@MinUmbra I am 100% down for happy queer smuts posting. And CWs being a thing here means people can go hard for that all the time without me having to split off a separate account to follow lewds. I can hide them if I'm having a sex-averse day or am in public or whatever. I'm so happy about that :)
