@aparrish The more I think about Mastodon, as a project, as a social network, the more I think it challenges the definition of success. Everyone, especially detractors, are quick to call it a failure or a nice try. While our daily activities here tend to show us the opposite. What is a successful social network that does not play the rules of close VC funded ones?

i love how in DS9 it's established that, being able to do all this amazing "hook the x into the y" bullshit they do on TNG and voyager... is not some amazing coincidence, it's explicitly how the federation computers are designed
and cardassian computers DON'T let you do that, bc cardassian society and ethics are totalitarian
the federation computers trust the chief engineer or whoever to decide that it's worth the risk to do smth possibly unsafe if they're gonna.. explode anyway if they don't, or whatever
Me, age 18: "wow all these stories about the power of love etc are really trite."
Me now: "Love and beauty are all that we have in the world, let's celebrate the shit out of them."
Yeah I was anxious the first time or two about asking for it but seriously theaters are generally super chill about it. Don't worry about "not needing it enough". If it helps, it helps.
Another movie theaters tip:
They offer subtitles! All you have to do is go up to the front desk and say "hey I'd like a subtitles thingy for <show>".
Most places, it's a long-focal-length screen on a gooseneck that you can position to the edge of your field of view.
At some newer theaters, they have glasses that project the subs directly over the screen.
I use the subs every time.
Okay y'all, PSA:
EARPLUGS. They are good shit when going to live music or movie theaters. Nowadays you can get reusable ones for <$15 that don't change the way things sound at all, just make it less loud. The keyword is "flat frequency response".
I've used these ones for years with good results, but there's plenty of other options. https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-ETY-Plugs-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard/dp/B0015WJQ7A
capitalism is a fuck
like imagine a world where the "stay at home mom" thing returns but it's just two staying-at-home-half-the-time people, or even four people who work like 30% of what one normal person would be
where your life balance would suddenly be more about you and you'd have more than a quarter of your life to live on your own terms
instead of spending hours and days for someone else
