I just finished reading Provenance, and

This is an especially nice in contrast to the hyper-competence of Breq in Ancillary.

I just finished reading Provenance, and

Ingray's fear and overwhelmed-ness resonated with me.

I super appreciate this depiction of someone who displays incredible courage while also still just sort of muddling along, trying to deal with situations outside of her experience and internalized ability.

The part where she had a gun pressed to her head really did convey "she is facing threat of imminent death and can't really deal" so much better than most stories.

Provenance is set in a different culture than Ancillary (within the same universe) and is approaching a somewhat different set of themes, but it's written in the same voice and is undeniably a work of the same author.

I /think/ that Radchaai culture has zero genders and not one, but am curious to hear if anyone feels otherwise :)

The last few books by Anne Leckie were set in a culture that had zero genders. The newest one is set in a culture with three :)

Box wine is a brilliant invention and almost entirely fixes the most annoying thing about the drink.

One thing that's really fascinating about tabletop RPGs is how permeable the barrier between what's inside and what's outside of the fiction is. Diagesis is a matter of negotiation.

Sometimes when I'm in the house and can't tell where my partner is I'll say "mew?" as a ping to get the "meow" locating response back.

@indi I think culture is also a big and unignorable part of it. Like you said in the post we're working as much off of cultural constructs of animals as much as of the animals themselves.

@starkatt I feel most comfortable when I can express my identity, and experience the identities of others, via a symbol set that include animal traits (biological and cultural) as a significant component.

That leaves a huge gaping "WHY?" gap, but it does seem to address the "what." ^.^

OPEN THREAD: what does being a furry mean to your personally? When you call yourself one, what does that convey?

Todo today:

- get replacement radiator cap
- renew vehicle registration (ugh, $)

-probably should pay medical bills but bleh, more $

I really love how in Kerbal Space Program, "get out and push" is a valid strategy if your spacecraft runs out of fuel.

It's not a *great* strategy, but on very rare occasions it can save a mission.

I've designed and built my own clock, even.
