Also, if you haven't seen The Iron Giant, I can't recommend it enough. It's a sweet, charming film about paranoia and xenophobia in 1950s America.

I want to destroy the idea that art is something that is made by a specialized class of people.

I can't draw for shit, never really learned to paint, can't make music, can't do so many things.

But there's lots of things I can do. I write, sometimes. I've learned how to make simple jewelry. Right now, I'm making silicone copies of penises. And dammit, all that counts.

There's so, so many things out there that qualify as art, and I know there's some that you can participate in the creation of.

Now I see it as super clumsy compared to any half-profressional work.

But I made a gemmed silver jewelry, and that's pretty dang cool.

Maybe I'll wear my cast silver orobouros necklace out tonight.

Fine metals teacher, early in the class: "I know it's more expensive, but you'll actually be really happy when you start working in silver instead of copper. It's just such a nicer material to work with."
Me: "Sounds fake but okay."

Me, a month later: "Oh shit she was totally right, silver is magical."

I miss working with silver. Really should re-do the wire wrap on that meteorite fragment necklace. Broke years ago and I didn't get around to fixing it.

Me, age 19: "There's so many nonstandard things about me that there's no way I'm ever gonna find a partner or social group that really Gets It on more than one or two."

Me now: "Okay the city I live in has an entire subculture of polyamorous trans gay furry communists."

Okay so I'm starting to realize that whoever is editing Great British Baking Show is really on top of their game. Lots of fun irony cuts, some pretty subtle and some less so.

Watching enough YouTube that I'm starting to be able to identify lots of various bits of royalty-free music.

BBC film crew rolls into Western Paupa expecting to film "primitive tribesmen", is shocked to discover that the folks there are used to film crews and are performing and expecting compensation.

It's so cute when podcast hosts get all excited about finally getting that sweet, sweet Audible sponsorship.

This one just said "we're a real grown-up podcast now!!!"

Whenever you see a fad/As Seen On TV item and catch yourself thinking "ugh, is that really necessary?", stop and think: for whom /might/ that be necessary?

Fidget spinners help satisfy the stimming urge for autistic people.

Slankets/snuggies are lifesavers for people in wheelchairs and on bed rest.

That pre-peeled orange in the plastic container? Imagine your arthritic grandma trying to peel an orange.

Most of that "unnecessary" stuff has a use case - it's just not /your/ use case.

Pacific Rim Uprising spoiler

It really stretches credibility that in all this time Newt is the only person who’s tried to fuck a kaiju.

economics/communism

Y'know what in a system that's a successor to capitalism I'm okay with the possibility of work in some fields giving above-average compensation.

I'm fine with a nurse or a teacher or a farm worker having twice the "purchasing power" or whatever as I do. Those are necessary, hardass jobs.

I'm not okay that people like venture capitalists make tens of thousands of times as much as I do while creating zero value.
