Also, FFVIII's Junction system's mechanics have interesting fictional consequences because you're letting a summonable monster spirit take up residence in your brain, which erases your memories (!!) the more you use them, which is why you don't remember tons of stuff from your past.
And you go to space! And fall in love! And basically rediscover Lemuria (Esthar)!
FFVIII is magic, man.
Also, FFVIII is a game about technomagic mercenary teenagers aiding an inept terrorist/resistance group in toppling an oppressive regime by assassinating a magical government official who turns out to be your mercenary school principal's wife and your possessed orphanage-mom. And that's disc one.
FFVIII is a game about growing up from the vantage of the young, and all the very real heartache and trauma figuring out who you are entails. It's about change and progression, and it doesn't trivialize the process.
Also, I didn't pick up on the fact that Quistis was super inappropriate for trying to have a relationship with a student, and basically got fired for it.
I also didn't pick up on her BDSM overtones with the whole... whip thing.

I love FFVIII because I played it at the right time in my life. I was dealing with a lot of teenage pain, self-hatred, family trauma. Note: I don't use "teenage" to trivialize these experiences, as people often do. Teenage pain is real pain and ought not to be approached dismissively.
FFVIII didn't treat my issues as melodramatic. FFVIII took my struggle seriously and didn't look down on me, tell me my pain wasn't real or dismiss my experiences as just more whining.
Also, it was a good game.
