i wish desktop OSes had more granular permissions systems for user software. things like "this application is allowed to read and write files to this one folder, display graphics on screen, and play sounds" or "hey this app wants to connect to the internet, do you allow this"

mobile devices have it! web browsers kinda have it! it'd be a fantastic feature for desktop operating systems in general. if an app tries to phone home and you didn't expect it to, you can just say "no"

@tklk i'm aware there are some fringe/research OSes that do this - the L4 kernel uses capabilities, for instance. i just wish it would gain more traction in the realm of "systems people actually write lots of software for" lmao

@typhlosion on mac littlesnitch has been (relatively, in that shrinking mac developer world) popular for years. sincerely don't know why mac hasn't tried implementing something like that natively. they already do a bunch of annoying stuff around unsigned apps, so they couldn't be worried about annoying users with popups.
