kas, who has been studying japanese: hey i can read that katakana! that says kokiri!!! whoaaaaaaaa

kas: oh! and that kanji next to it, that means forest! it says kokiri forest!!!!!! [popping off]

@typhlosion i read the image text before i read the thread and then laughed bc i pretty much did the exact same thing

@typhlosion japanese learning hype \o/ ignore that i haven't picked up my genki textbook in months;;

@vagabondsun i've just been doing lots of duolingo lessons and lots of independent research (and listening to lots of japanese music and seeing if i can figure out what the lyrics mean)

@typhlosion i've heard a lot of mixed opinion on how duo handles japanese, how have you been finding it?

@vagabondsun i get the feeling there are some things it does (like introduce katakana at the same time as basic kanji?? or introduce kanji out of grade-level order) that don't bother me but only because i'm fucking epic

(by which i mean i burned through some katakana flashcards on another site when this came up)

it also doesn't teach stroke order for kana or kanji, i'll have to drill that myself elsewhere at some point

@typhlosion hmm, yeah, i think i'd probably do ok with that as well having picked up kana and some basic kanji elsewhere

maybe i'll give it a go! who knows, maybe the incredibly passive-aggressive owl is exactly what i need to get my ass in gear
