How do you ask where someone is from anyway

I've had someone ask me that before but it was really asking why I knew both mando and canto lmao

I feel like when it's a genuine question it's usually about something else
Like idk, why do you speak the languages you do, do you do anything for lunar new year, how come you call that dish something different than me

Or sometimes it's actually just a question about your heritage, whether you're an immigrant or if you're a few generations removed from being an immigrant, because as a child of immigrants it's an interesting thing to know about someone if they might, like, have the same experiences as you wrt removedness from some ethnic culture
