imagine a modern computing world where everything is the same except we still need separate sound cards for some reason. and games make a big deal out of being compatible with different ones. it would be a worse world in every way but its still fun to think about

@typhlosion would these sound cards be on par with like modern digital synths tho?
like would my sound card just be serum?

@typhlosion i had the idea for two reasons
there was a monkey island game that if you happened to own a particular synth, you could hook it up to your pc and the game would use that instead of your sound card

and because there's like people making desktop synths with remakes of old sound cards

@ElusiveConfection i'm a chiptune musician who sometimes works with midi and it would rule to have a sound card that acts like a Roland MT-32 so you don't have to rely on software emulation to get that sound

@typhlosion software emulations of digital synths tend to be really great but usually they're hard to come by for certain synths
im not familiar with the mt-32 but a cursory search has me interested
