hey critters, what's the state of things these days as far as gpus? is there a clear advantage between nvidia and amd, what's good value for money, what's better in terms of compatibility and features, etc
i ask because i was looking at getting an rtx 3060 (price ~$240 for reference) but i realized i hadnt looked into any amd chips so im not sure what to compare in terms of power and price point. im a pc building newbert so it's hard for me to sort through the specs to find good deals and stuff
@typhlosion if you care at all about linux support that doesn't involve relying on a proprietary driver to not break your setup (and which might stop supporting your GPU after 5 years or so), stay the hell away from nvidia
other than that I don't really know. there might be tradeoffs case-by-case but in the long run the details are mostly moot. idr the sitch with nvidia and vendor-neutral adaptivesync, but that's the only thing immediately coming to mind. there was a while where nvidia cards were ridiculously expensive compared to amd ones though I think
oh yeah and discrete intel GPUs are a thing now, but I don't think there's much reason to care about them over the others just yet
@typhlosion at least the crypto crash helped a lot with prices
as far as i'm aware nvidia is still king, but ymmv
@typhlosion If you are interested in doing any compute tasks, definitely AMD. Otherwise, for pure gaming, NVidia works well.
(opens my umbrella in preparation for a deluge of gpu opinions)
