i'm feeling a bit like the guy from xkcd #606 lately because it seems i get on games a few years after the period where they're in vogue, but ive been playing a lot of vampire survivors lately and wow i get why this game inspired a whole microgenre
@chirpbirb i dont even have the excuse of not being able to afford a cutting edge computer, i built myself a whole new one just a few months ago. im just easily distractable and also my backlog is enormous
@typhlosion i have a steam deck + a good gaming machine and a 1.5k stuffed library so i completely fuckin understand
@typhlosion for example, i recently started playing orcs must die 1 which came out... 13 years ago
@typhlosion i feel like vampire survivors is still recent-ish... are they not--
@silverhawke vampire survivors went on early access in 2021 and came out fully in 2022. to my understanding it gets regular updates still. but around the time it was exploding in popularity and showing up in the game journalisms and stuff, i didn't play it
@typhlosion meanwhile it completely flew over my head when it was showing up in game journalism, i only learnt about it because my friend showed it to me when i visited him ksjfdkg
@typhlosion Have you tried out Samobee's Elemental Survivors yet? It has a very extensive free demo!
@OchotonidKnight i haven't! i'll give it a poke sometime
@typhlosion if you want to talk about what makes it so good, I'm interested in your thoughts!
(I'm not sure I've heard of the game before today.)
@lioness you attack automatically and the only input you have in the moment-to-moment gameplay is moving around and selecting which powerup you get when you level up, which sounds boring but winds up being quite satisfying, because you get strong enough over the course of a run that you wind up mowing down huge hordes of the smaller enemies
also runs have a time limit, usually 30 minutes, which makes it easy to play for short periods. you CAN circumvent the limit but not til much later
@lioness also, like many good roguelites, this game is absolutely lousy with unlocks and meta progression, so there's almost always something new to do or try or look for, which gives it huge replay value
@typhlosion i understand that comic to my core but also vampire survivors slaps so hard
