my partner nerd-sniped me by showing me this post: https://twitter.com/ObsoleteSony/status/1766358259852623873 (image attached)
it's a Sony SRF-201 fm radio from 1985, and it's the size of a credit card and only 3mm thick. i immediately wanted to know how they got it so thin, and from staring at a picture of the internals the best i can figure is "surface-mount components and an absurdly compact circuit board design"
i don't even listen to the radio but i kind of want one because look at it
@pup_hime dreams ruined forever
@pup_hime @typhlosion wait y'all don't have FM radio anymore?
@noiob @typhlosion i dont really listen to radio but i thought everything was switching over to DAB?
@pup_hime @typhlosion they haven't managed to switch off FM here in Germany, probably because there's still a lot of people relying on it (esp in cars)
@pup_hime @typhlosion and also very few people use DAB even though it's required in new radios at this point
@typhlosion a design like that will make you want to start listening to the radio so you can carry it around and show it off.
@typhlosion that is indeed cool! right before my time (born '88), so i never saw one of those before now!
@typhlosion oh dang I was not aware of this piece of kit
It's so tiny! I love it!
@typhlosion You'll have the NPR affiliate, college stations, and possibly a classical radio station...so it's still got some use.
@typhlosion aaaaa I love it
@typhlosion it wouldnt work today anyway
