Remember when george saunders followed up his man booker prize by putting out a book written entirely in uwu foxxo speak

Just a reminder that Twitter perceives the Fediverse as a threat, and their project Blue Sky is actively spreading FUD about ActivityPub on their website. blueskyweb.xyz/blog/3-6-2022-a

Okay so if you're new and feeling a bit lonely now your bazillion follows are gone, it's a good idea to either click Local or Federated and start interacting with other users so you can rebuild your social circle. It's not going to be easy and I advise you don't quit Twitter cold turkey. Think of this as like changing your phone number, takes time and effort.

long, on moving to Masto

posted this on Twitter but it's probably useful here too:

I'm not gonna say "join Mastodon" or "don't join Mastodon" but please don't join the two instances run by the main developer (mastodon social and mastodon online), they're hopelessly overrun and as a result of that not well-moderated.

Join a small or medium-sized instance and use the public timelines. They're made up from ppl who people on the instance follow, which is why there's instances built around different topics (but you're usually welcome to post about anything). Hmu if you want a recommendation

You can also create multiple accounts, all the good apps support multi-user (I'm recommending Tusky on Android and Toot! (paid) for iOS), if you for example want an AD or an account for gaming and a personal one I'd highly recommend creating them on different instances

If and when the mastodon surge happens, I think admins need to do more to set expectations on how blocking works. Reminding users that they can personally block instances and users. Help to ensure that user problems do not become “instance vs instance”. Admins have a responsibility to their users and the wider community, and should try to avoid instance blocks for dispute resolution unless it involves Prohibited Content. Learn from failed instances.

maybe the problem is the concept of globally interconnected social media in general

One of a few elbow-bangs today from trying to Actually Use instead of Casually Use Mastodon: I actually *cannot* figure out how to add people to a list. If I go to the list of people I follow, the only option is "unfollow", no add-list or block verb. If I open new tabs for each person I want to follow it opens tabs in *their* instance, and anyway there's no add-to-list verb on the m.s instance user pages. No list option on the ⋯ menu next to individual posts, either.

New people to the #fediverse, particularly those who are academics or journalists:

know that unlike Twitter, almost all people here *do not* consent to having their posts quoted without prior permission.

Do not scrap a bunch of posts, or re-embed them in articles, without getting consent.

hello new fedi users. it's really not that much better here

chess variant idea: each player starts with only their king on the board; all other pieces are in the players' inventories. on each turn a player can choose either to place a piece from their inventory onto the board, anywhere in their first two rows, or move a piece they've placed. when a piece is captured it does not go back into the inventory, it is removed for the rest of the game
