it's one thing to have studied physics by doing problems from a textbook, it's another thing entirely to perform experiments that let you internalize the concepts

that approach is useful in learning about anything, i think

i think that curiosity is the most important virtue

curiosity about the universe leads to scientific knowledge, but also

compassion and empathy grow from curiosity about other people, their motivations, and their beliefs and feelings

most of the conservative talking heads shows function by shutting down this curiosity, telling you that everything you need to know about what other people are thinking you can learn by just listening to *them* instead

i think lots of internet discourse has a similar, but not quite as intense effect
