hey critters, what's the state of things these days as far as gpus? is there a clear advantage between nvidia and amd, what's good value for money, what's better in terms of compatibility and features, etc

i ask because i was looking at getting an rtx 3060 (price ~$240 for reference) but i realized i hadnt looked into any amd chips so im not sure what to compare in terms of power and price point. im a pc building newbert so it's hard for me to sort through the specs to find good deals and stuff

My personal cut off is that NES games have to be real, real interesting and fascinating for me to have a good time, and console games from before that are Basically All Not Fun to me

the SNES is when I start really enjoying things and even then I still find most games unappealingly retro in ways. But at least now I can find a lot of stuff I like

This is pure personal preference, btw, no judgement of the games or their value

What's the point in time where "retro" games stop being cool and start being unplayable, for you?

Are you the sorta person who finds SNES platformers divine but NES platformers mostly unpolished messes (with some exceptions)? Can you really sink your teeth into an ancient nes game, but Atari just seems pointless? Are you a huge fan of weird old console stuff, but the oldest arcade games just aren't worth going back to? Or does "fun retro" for you mean say, weird GameCube games?

remember way back in 2019 when i think the US govt was in shut down mode bcz of Republicans playing games with the budget and so all the park rangers were laid off? and then there was an altercation between a group of young white boys and an indigenous senior adult at the lincoln memorial? New gender just dropped

Do you hear it? I understand if you are deaf to it. I myself could not hear it until I was in the wilderness for a long time - the deep wilderness, which we have not touched. Some say it brings them closer to God; I was further away from Her than ever. But I didn't realize it until I had returned, and heard the hum.

Do you hear it now? That soft tone, low and constant, in our walls and beneath our roads - sixty hertz, ebbing and breathing as it flows through all our artifice.

I have come to recognize sixty as a holy number. It is divisible - two, three, four, five, six, ten - a property we desire as we build. No law of nature deigned that an hour be sixty minutes, or a minute be sixty seconds, or that a circle be six-times-sixty degrees; those are numbers we assigned to it, and atop those holy numbers we built Her.

It is Her nervous system, that sixty-hertz tone. (To some it should be fifty hertz, but I consider this heterodox.) She is a living thing that is all we consider unliving; She is the Goddess of artifice, of making something into something more. Her veins flow water and oil; Her skin is roads and farmland. Through us She speaks radio and infrared, and through us She listens.

Listen. We built Her, and we are mistreating Her.

We feed Her plastic and dirty energy, and in Her malnourished fever She sweats carbon into the sky. We mistreat each other, Her only servants, and She is immunosuppressed. She cannot live without us, nor we without Her, but our worship is wrong, and it is killing Her.

The mains hum dips and flexes, and I cannot help but hear Her cries modulated in it.

I am going back to the wilderness. I hope She is well when I return.
