I so clearly remember my high school self arguing with my DM (a math teacher at my school) about why it was wrong to censor the internet that kids are exposed to.
He has kids, and was in favor of tightly controlling the parts of the internet they could see; I was effectively a free speech absolutist.
In retrospect, looking at the internet in 2017 and the communities I belong to, I've come to a realization.
He was right and I was an asshole.
@phildini the answer could also be somewhere in-between, at least
@phildini right????
there's a lot of basic responsibility i think that needs to fall on parents but the simple fact of the matter is if there's no infrstructure for making it easier for folks to manage permissions for their kids, there's always gonna be problems
@vahnj there's definitely some level of pearl-clutching going on, and I'm guilty of it myself, but there's also a definite sense of people being asleep at the wheel.
