@LensaMoon@mastodon.art @anthracite @Metaph@scalie.business @Weavrr@mastodon.art @Malachyte@mastodon.art kobolds originally a goblinoid spirit that is often a servant of manual labor of some kind - commonly household workers and miners were what they were known for, depicted as childlike (read: toddler) in germanic folklore

over time several folks picked up on this, particularly d&d and they were originally "humanoid dogs but with scales" and kinda had both in OD&D

@Malachyte@mastodon.art @Weavrr@mastodon.art @Metaph@scalie.business @anthracite @LensaMoon@mastodon.art here's where they diverge: japan picked up on kobolds around this point and took them further down the dog path, and then D&D took them and decided "hey, what if dragon servants with dragon blood but super weak?" and went the full scalie route

there is no wrong way to go with kobolds, they are cute in pretty much every facet

obvs the ones i really like are the dragon-like ones, but the dogbolds are great too

then there's a modern rendition that softens them and makes them kind of like bangaa from the FF Tactics universe, which are known as "cutebolds" - still scaled, but soft

ofc there's also the mouse-like kobolds of WoW but everyone knows those and they aren't my favorite (but are equally valid)
