frustration with open source "alternatives"

this IS firefox! telling me to use firefox won't help when you don't support some firefox ports apparently

re: frustration with open source "alternatives"

the video itself doesn't actually work btw. just plays the audio and shows a black rectangle

re: frustration with open source "alternatives"

and before anyone brings it up: yes, i am aware of the technical details and that firefox for ios uses a uiwebview ie mobile safari to render pages

but that doesn't change the fact that i'm using firefox and the website is telling me to fix the problem by using firefox..........

AND i also think it's wrong to release a product that's ostensibly supposed to compete with other mainstream websites WITHOUT MAKING SURE IT WORKS ON 1/3 OF ALL SMARTPHONES?????

re: frustration with open source "alternatives"

@wolfgang I wonder if maybe it's seeing the user agent contains firefox but not its supported versions, and assumes that means it's out of date? so it's telling you to update the browser you're using, but whoever designed it thinks the way that you could tell on old paper form letters which parts were pre-printed and which were filled in with a typewriter,, is the way form-filled text is supposed to be so they made it bold? this is probably giving them way too much credit

re: frustration with open source "alternatives"

@else i... might need some clarification for the typewriter metaphor 😅

re: frustration with open source "alternatives"

@wolfgang this is the closest I could find (it's hand-written in rather than typewritten, but the idea is the same). I was thinking maybe the website maker thought this look was intended to make it easier to read, or is a meaningful aesthetic choice, rather than to just save the person sending it from writing the same words over and over for each letter

re: frustration with open source "alternatives"

@wolfgang but now that I'm looking at it fresh, this has nothing to do with what you were seeing and idk why I brought it up lol 😅

re: frustration with open source "alternatives"

@else idk either but i mildly enjoyed the detour anyway 😄

re: frustration with open source "alternatives"
