remember when in the 00s foss activists warned us of a future where you can't change your computers software, and also all computer software that you can get is absolute shit because of monopolies and capitalism?

this is exactly what the tv market feels like right now software wise

i just want a big screen that displays pixels and plays audio on big built in speakers, and can be turned on/off with a remote.

no overscan
no underscan
no 6000Hz motion smoothing
no 60fps frame interpolation
no 8-core image processor for ultra hdr qled effects
no .4s delay from all the friggin processing
no wifi capabilities
no dedicated netflix button
no terribly unnavigable settings screen that's 5 layers into some ephemeral operating system's menus

my parents have some expensive high end smart tv with some terrible operating system that shouldn't exist, where it takes almost a full second to click into any of the ui menus, and pressing the input switcher button takes SEVERAL seconds

imagine spending $1000 on a brand new tv only for you to get home and find out that its ui works like a raspberry pi trying to play skyrim

my former roommates tv (which i'm now replacing) had an extra bright mode, which was the only usable setting during the day for most of the year; but it came with the catch that everything was "dynamically smoothed" to 60fps and the image is max-contrast'ed to give you all the tiniest details

i watched ds9 on that thing, most of it with that weird brightness mode, and i just couldn't get over how it made everything look like it's constantly in fast forward, and whatever the opposite of epic is

that curséd "dynamic" mode made all of ds9's most dramatic moments just look like people in a room standing around moving comically fast

ds9, but make it slapstick
