brief wildlife rehab volunteering report

yesterday I got to feed my first baby Douglas squirrel! it was very soft, but its head was kind of weirdly bullet-shaped which is apparently normal for them, so I gotta say Eastern grey squirrels are actually cuter as babies. flying squirrels still win on all counts, being cuter, softer, sweeter, and easier to feed.

we have a juvenile raven!! it's the first one that's ever been brought in, so the staff has been researching and networking with other centers to make a care plan for it. it's apparently very healthy and HONGRY. I didn't get to see it, it was in a closed and covered cage with goggles and a facemask hanging from the front, evidently handling it requires PRECAUTIONS. with any luck, if it survives I'll get to glimpse it later in the mews or flight pen. yayraven! :D

also bald eagles are still REALLY BIG. I mean, I knew that, but going in the flight pen with them and having one flapping around overhead really drives it home.

also we have approximately one million baby ducks right now. and half a million baby raccoons. we're actually running low on baby squirrels, but we do have one million adult squirrels ready for release, and we're expecting the second baby squirrel wave in a couple of months. wheee! XD
